Activities and Experiences
At the refuge, you can enjoy a range of outdoor activities, perfect for visitors of all ages:
- Hiking and Biking Trails: Explore trails like the Indigo Trail, which is open daily and leads to the Wildlife Education Boardwalk. Don’t miss the chance to see animal tracks and scat (poop!) replicas, perfect for kids and nature enthusiasts.
- Paddling and Boating: Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or boat and explore the waterways. Guided tours are available through Tarpon Bay Explorers (239-472-8900), including tram, boat, and paddling tours.
- Wildlife Observation: Climb the observation towers to get a great view of the animals in the refuge. Birdwatching is especially popular here, with more than 245 bird species making the refuge their home.
- Scenic Drive: Take a four-mile drive through the refuge (closed on Fridays), where you can see a variety of wildlife. It’s a relaxing way to take in the scenery from the comfort of your car.
Visitor & Education Center
The Visitor & Education Center is open daily and offers free hands-on activities for kids and adults alike. Seasonal programs and tours are also available, providing an interactive way to learn more about the wildlife and the refuge’s history.
Guided and Self-Guided Tours
