Lighthouse: Explore the Historic Sanibel Lighthouse

Welcome to one of Sanibel Island’s most iconic landmarks, the Sanibel Lighthouse. Located on the eastern tip of the island, this historic lighthouse has been a guiding light for sailors since 1884 and remains a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the island.

A Glimpse Into History

The Sanibel Lighthouse is the first lighthouse built on Florida’s Gulf Coast north of Key West. In the late 1800s, Sanibel Island residents petitioned Congress for a lighthouse to help ships navigate the Gulf of Mexico to reach the Punta Rassa shipping port. After years of waiting, Congress finally approved the funds in 1883, and construction began shortly after.

However, the project faced an unexpected obstacle: the ship carrying the iron parts for the lighthouse sank just two miles off Sanibel’s coast! Thankfully, a team of divers from Key West was able to recover most of the materials, and work on the lighthouse continued. By August 1884, the Sanibel Lighthouse stood tall at 98 feet and was lit for the first time by its first keeper, Dudley Richardson.

How the Lighthouse Operated

In its early days, the lighthouse was powered by kerosene, which meant the keeper had to constantly monitor the light. Over time, advancements were made:

  • 1923: The lighthouse was converted to acetylene gas, making it easier to operate.
  • 1949: It became fully automated, no longer needing a keeper to manage it manually.
  • 1962: When the Sanibel Causeway was built, the lighthouse was finally electrified by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Today, the original lens has been replaced with a modern beacon, while the original lens is displayed at the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village.

A National Historic Landmark

In 1974, the Sanibel Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its historical significance. Its charming design and rich history have made it a beloved tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over to experience its beauty and learn about its past.

Visiting the Lighthouse

The area around the lighthouse is now owned by the City of Sanibel, which ensures it maintains its historical charm. You can visit Lighthouse Beach, a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
